1: In the Beginning — God’s Original Design

God’s Eternal Purpose Before Time

Before there was a universe, a sun, or even an angel, God existed in perfect oneness within Himself—Spirit, Light, and Life (John 4:24; 1 John 1:5). In this eternal state, He carried within Himself the desire for a family—sons and daughters who would share His nature, His glory, and His fellowship. This was not a reaction to sin, but His original intention from before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4–5).

His plan was not merely to create servants or worshipers, but to reproduce Himself in a creation that could walk with Him in love and freedom. This is why mankind was made “in His image, after His likeness” (Genesis 1:26).

Spirit Life in the Garden

When God formed man, He shaped his body from the dust (Genesis 2:7), but the life within him was not ordinary breath—it was the very Spirit of God. Adam’s life was sustained not by blood, but by the Spirit. In this state, he was not subject to aging, sickness, or death.

The Garden of Eden was more than a location; it was a realm of God’s presence, where Heaven and Earth were in harmony. In Eden:

  • God Himself was Adam’s teacher (Genesis 2:16–17).
  • The Tree of Life symbolized God’s sustaining Spirit life.
  • No death, pain, or corruption existed.

Adam and Eve’s relationship was pure—without lust, fear, or shame (Genesis 2:25). They were united under God’s Word, destined to expand Eden across the earth by the spoken creative Word, not through mortal reproduction.

Man’s Role as God’s Image-Bearer

God gave man a commission:

  1. Be fruitful and multiply — not through the serpent’s later method of sexual reproduction, but through the spoken Word, as God creates.
  2. Subdue the earth — bring all creation under God’s order.
  3. Have dominion — rule creation as God’s steward and representative (Genesis 1:28).

Adam was God’s ambassador on earth—a living temple for the Spirit. His dominion was not exploitation but guardianship.

The Fellowship Design

The highest purpose of man’s creation was fellowship with God. Eden was a place of daily communion—God walking with man in the cool of the day (Genesis 3:8). This was face-to-face relationship, without a veil, without fear.

Worship was not a ritual; it was the natural overflow of union with the Creator. Adam didn’t “pray” as we do now—he conversed with God in the same atmosphere.

The Unfallen World

In God’s original design:

  • Man was immortal by Spirit life.
  • Earth was in perfect harmony—no storms, no predation, no decay.
  • There was no separation between the spiritual and physical realms.
  • Mankind was clothed with light—the glory of God covered them (Psalm 104:2).

This was the echo of Eden—God’s dream made visible.

Summary of God’s Original Design

  • Life Source: Spirit, not blood.
  • Birth Method: Word-spoken, not sexual.
  • Purpose: Fellowship, rulership, image-bearing.
  • Environment: Eden—perfect harmony between Heaven and Earth.

God’s design has never changed. The Fall did not erase His plan; it only delayed its fulfillment. Redemption is not about starting something new—it is about restoring what was from the beginning (Acts 3:21).
